The vineyards and their soils (terroirs)
The HAEGI Domaine holds 27 different lots of vineyards with a total surface of 10ha, distribued over MITTELBERGHEIM and EICHHOFFEN.
Strongly attached to their native earth, the Haegi family devotes its efforts to produce wines which express the character of the various soils.
Therefore, each grape variety and each lot is elaborated individually.

MITTELBERGHEIM Some of our vineyards are situated in low, gently sloped surfaces of moist lime or day. These conditions provide ideal conditions for our superb bottle-fermeted Alsatian sparkling wine called Crémant d'Alsace. The upper vineyards on the Vosges foothills, reaching up to the timberline, offer steep soils dominated by Vosges sandstone rubble. The wines : a distinct aromatic profile in harmony with an impressive structure. Riesling, Muscat and Sylvaner are at their best here. The HAEGI Domaine uses 4.5 ha here. |
|
EICHHOFFEN Colluvium soil of chalky piedmont. Moderate slopes facilitate the use of vineyard machinery. The soil retain springtime moisture very well. The wines : this soil supports the typical expression in each of our Alsatian grapes varieties. The Domaine HAEGI operates 3 ha of vineyards here, predominantly growing Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris or Pinot Noir. |

THE SITE NAMED BRANDLUFT (
see soil texture
) situated on the premises of Mittelbergheim, this chalky soil of marl and sandstone with its deep, moist subsoil, well aerated and permeable for water, is highly suitable for Riesling. Brandluft is at 260 metres above the sea level, well sheltered from the winds, and in proximity to its prominent vineyard neighbour Zotzenberg. Its orientation to the south and its moderate slope provide for a quick warming of the soil due to the stony surface. Its name, derived from Germand Brand (fire or burning) and Luft (air) adequately describes the prevailing microclimate. The wines : floral aspects with intense, fullbodied aromas, an elegant freshness and a delicate character. The Domaine HAEGI owns 0,50 ha of Riesling at BRANDLUFT. |
|
THE SITE NAMED STEIN A marly limestone soil upon the premises of Mittelbergheim which tends to retain water, it is the eastern extension of the Brandluft site. Its southern exposure and its location at a distance from the village protects it from the northern winds. This terroir is privileged to yield Riesling. The wines : harvested slithly overripe this soil awards them force, body, and a powerfull structure. The Domaine HAEGI exploits 0,44 ha of Riesling. |

THE GREAT GROWTH (GRAND CRU) ZOTZENBERG (

) Facing south, this exceptional bowl-shaped inclined site with its soil of crumbled marl and limestone overlooks Mittelbergheim. Classified Great Growth (Grand Cru) in 1982, the 36.45 ha of this vineyard are located between 225 to 320 metres of altitude. The wines: Zotzenberg wines will improve well with aging, presenting themselves with finesse, a remarkably strong aroma and rich floral and mineral notes. The Domaine HAEGI has 0,67 ha of Riesling, 0,33 ha of Gewurztraminer and 0,15 ha of Sylvaner here. |
